In '88, the 900S was upgraded to LH 2.4 while the Turbo stayed LH 2.2. The Turbo was upgraded to LH 2.4 in '89. But the LH 2.4 ECU for '88 has a few small differences from the '89 2.4 ECU.
Last year I remember reading some posts from Justin van Abrahams about upgrading an LH 2.2 car (IIRC it was an '86, but don't quote me) to 2.4 so it would pass California emissions. It's a lot of work.
Most of the mechaincal things from an '89 900T should work in an '88 900T. Brakes are the same. The 5-speed in an '89 has the large pinion bearing. Distributors are different, speedometers are different, AIC valves are different. ECUs, of course, are different. But most parts other than that are the same.
