Knock sensors are easy and almost fun to test. Attach a timing light correctly (vac advance hose plugged if you've got it) and, watching the timing, tap on the intake manifold or the head with a mallet (simulating knock) and see if the timing retards, then resets itself. In this manner, just about anything slamming on the block or manifolds or especially the head could make the sensor react if it's at the right frequency in the vicinity of the knock sensor.
I lightly lubed my clutch shaft two years ago, no problems yet. It slid home with hand pressure. I didn't know this (auto-manual conversion, never done it before) so I tried light tapping with a mallet and then was convinced it was set.
