Which might seem like a half-baked question. About a month ago, my 92 900s started developing a knock/hammer in or about the flywheel. It disappears instantly when I press in the clutch. The car concurrently also developed a driveability problem of sluggishness, rough idle (not hunting), and now a hard start problem (it makes the starter drag through part of its cycle). I've checked many, many sensors, tried a known good AMM, replaced fuelprssure regulator and f-filter, clamped off vacuum hose....
I replaced the clutch less than a year ago, along with the pilot bearing. My fear is that I didn't put a glob/dab of grease on the end of the clutch shaft when I installed it. I've learned from a thread here that the grease lubes the pilot bearing. Another thread cautioned against forcing/driving the clutch shaft home that last half inch or so, especially if I'd already tightened the six pressure plate to flywheel bolts. I'm sure I violated both of those rules when I did the clutch job. It's not the release bearing- I just replaced that again two days ago.
Any advice is appreciated, but one question is this: Could the pilot bearing going out trigger the knock sensor. Would/could that then cause this almost limp-home mode?
I'm not one of these guys who is just too lazy to learn the hard way, and am grateful for the experts on this site. My dog-eared Bentley's stays by my bedside. I've had to learn so much about this car, and replace so many parts, that now selling it to cut my losses is no longer an option. I find myself looking for the next 900 to add to the stable. Thanks for the sanity control.
