mac-- Not that I haven't considered it! Upside: Your points re: ready conversion. Also, it would be useful for its intended purpose which was a car that I could work on and that my wife could/would drive.
Downside: Prior to failure, I was treated to the horrible performance (power range, road noise) of the Saab 3 spd auto. What a piece of crap, produced, I presume, to satisfy a US demographic that wants to be SEEN driving a Saab but didn't/doesn't want the actual performance of the Real Deal. The sound of the automatic rapping out at 3700 rpm at road speed is an abomination to my ears.
I've seriously considered that option, though. Best bet for utility, performance and longevity is a $2500+ rebuild/reman, but for that money I could buy a decent used GM or Japanese product that would probably have fewer upkeep probs as daily driver. Lots of used Saabs available with 100k+ miles and auto tranny, but I suspect that most are on the market because of shifting problems associated with the auto trans, and the risk of installing one crappy unit to replce a proven crappy unit is more than I'm inclined to take. For now.... But maybe...
Thanks for your input, though,
SW
