I am in the middle of replacing all suspension components, and while doing the front, I noticed the spring on the passenger side is shifted while seated in the upper a-arm. I looked at the driver's side, and that spring sits in a straight line (from the top of the spring to the bottom), whereas the passenger side spring starts out straight from the top, then as it progresses to the upper a-arm, it shifts and bends slightly towards the front of the car. It's noticeable enough to be clearly visible that it does not sit in a perfect vertical position (as does the driver's side).
The upper ball joint on the pass. side was completely destroyed. The rubber boot was ripped in half and the joint itself sat in the upper a-arm in a "cock-eyed" manner. The driver's side upper ball joint is not damaged.
I noticed that there had been some bodywork done on the pass. side, leading me to believe this car was involved in an accident on that side. This also makes me think that the a-arm could be bent. However, could just the upper a-arm be damaged and not the lower? The lower one seems to be fine, as does that ball joint.
When I look at the a-arm while still in the car and the upper ball joint is removed, I can see that the spring seat is not level. It turns slightly towards the front of the car. Could this have been caused by driving with the bad ball joint, or did the accident cause the a-arm to bend which in turn damaged the ball joint? Would putting in a new ball joint make the spring seat sit horizontal again? When I look at the a-arm and the spring seat, I cannot see where it is damaged (no visual signs of bent metal or rust); I can only see that it does not sit horizontal. Could the spring be damaged/bent, causing the seat to not sit correctly?
