Well, the steering geometry will be off, so at the very least tires will wear out more quickly than you want. At worst, it can cause unpredictable handling and maybe a dangerous road situation. You mentioned that the upper ball joint was pretty well mangled and was at a bad angle. The angle won't change, so that could put cause the ball joint to wear more quickly than you want.
As long as you have access to anothwr car to get you where you need to go, it's worth spending the time to so it. Just be careful.
