The mechanic left a wrench in me? (alternator)

Hi everybody
Long time searcher/reader, first time poster.
I recently had the alternator replaced in my '89 SPG (as well as the AC idler arm) and after the car was returned to me, there's a noise coming from behind the dash. It sounds as if something is clunking around (metal on metal) and occurs when going over bumps or a quick stop/start or on a fast corner.
The guy who did the work is a grumpy mofo (although the shop is owned by a really cool guy) and I believe I may have done something to piss him off, if not just having a pain-in-the-ass alternator job for him to do that day. Who knows? Maybe it was the Green Bay Packers sticker on my Minneapolis car.
My toolbox, which is nestled tightly behind the driver's seat, was also left open when I got the car back, and I'm pretty sure it was closed when I dropped it off.
My question is, then, is there an enclosed place in the firewall or whatever where there would be room for a wrench or screwdriver to be deposited before wrapping the job up? Or is there something else that could be causing the clunking? There was no such noise before the work was done.
Thanks, everybody, in advance.
Christian
