Clutch binding on input shaft? What are symptoms?

The clutch disk and input shaft should behave as one unit, always - - they're splined together and motor either drives tranny through disk, or drives input shaft into tranny-in-neutral through disk, or pressure plate is released so disk-and-input-shaft barely spin or spin at a lower speed. But they're always together as one.
As burlyb suggests, possibly a stiff pilot bearing is giving you trouble. That would give you some drag on the input shaft as if clutch were still partly engaged when it is fully released.
Or possibly you have a failing clutch master cylinder or slave, or air in the line, which would keep clutch from totally releasing.
Grease might be a short-term palliative if your trouble is a bad pilot bearing. The nose of the input shaft is meant to fit snugly into the inner race of the pilot bearing, which is supposed to turn with the shaft. If the bearing is seized and not turning easily, greasing the shaft tip might let it spin inside the bearing, for a while. But it's not a long term answer and it might not work at all.
