Having "been there done that" I would caution you that sending a teen ager into the sink or swimm world of driving is sufficiently tramatic for any parent without doing it in a classic car you have an emtoinal investment in or worse, a car with the performance potential of a Saab turbo--not that you'd be able to afford full coverage insurance on one with a teenage driver on the policy. You need to think in terms of two cars. For the daughter a great "learner" car would be a 900S automatic cheap enough to have minimal insurance. Assume she's going to crack it up to some degree and buy accordingly, if she makes it throught the first year or two unscathed then upgrade. As for yourself, convertibles actually tend to be better cared for since they are worth more and often driven more for pleasure rather than transportation.
