tranny swap update

Began prepping the "new" replacement tranny (89) for my 82C900 (with 86 16VT engine). Gave it a good exterior cleaning, and I'm scrubbing and flushing obvious interior gunk as I go. No evident gear damage, syncro or fork failure, mystery lateral movement, or excessive metal shavings around the magnetic plug, all of which is a relief. I did do the reverse gear modification which ensures that the reverse gear engages that much more, which helps eliminate popping out of reverse. Tommorrow I reassemble after cleaning the cover mating surfaces and applying a thin layer of silicone along the gaskets, followed by a torque wrench tightening of the thread lock fluid assisted bolts (which are being chem dip stripped as I type). Then I pull the old box. By Tuesday evening the new box should be on board and operational. While looking at the reverse gear function it became obvious why it's sometimes difficult to engage while parked, or to disengage it if the car is parked on a hill or against a tire stop. Reverse is a direct gear to gear meshing (no syncro mechanism), and if the teeth don't line up just so, it ain't gonna engage. The reverse gear teeth surface is also quite rough compared with the other gear pressure surfaces, most likely because of it's infrequent use, so that can make it less likely to slide away while under pressure while parked.
