Ticked off cause my new alternator is busted i think

I installed a BRAND NEW alternator in August because my original one failed the day I was supposed to leave for school in NC from KY. Now, I am a week away from making the trip back to KY for the summer and according to my volt gauge, the new autozone alternator is failing. I get the full 14 volts without any load, but as soon as i turn the headlights on it drops to 13. Add a cooling fan and a cabin fan and the volts drop just barely below twelve. I'm sure I can take it back to Autozone and get a new alternator, but the job is a real pain, especially because I stripped the little hex bolt on the mounting bracket last time, now the only way to do it is to remove the oil filter housing!!! I am just going to get most of my trip home done in the daylight so I don't need to turn on my headlights. When putting in a new alternator once/if I make it home, should I go ahead and upgrade to the 110amp 9000 version? What does that entail and what are the benefits? I just needed to vent my frustration, I don't think there is all that much help/advice that can be offered to this one.
