....One or more of the valves may have taken a divot out of a piston. Or a valve head could've snapped off and rattled around in the cylinder taking chunks out of the cylinder wall. Worth a look, though. You may luck out.
Check the timing chain. It's very rare for a cam to snap without something interfering first. Perhaps the chain went and a piston punched a valve back up and popped the guide, killing the cam.
If you decide to pull the motor, it's a LOT easier than a rear wheel drive car. The motor/tranny (power unit)lifts straight off the mounts without worrying about an input shaft or a torque converter snagging.
As far as the procedure, it's actually easer to do than describe so the book makes it seem harder than it is. If you've pulled any kind of engine before, this one will seem pretty easy.
