Sometimes, and I mean extremely rare cases, it could be an internal flaw in the gear box allowing it to pop out of third. I don't know where the problem lies and I cannot present a solution.
Can't say if this is the case for you?
It have only happened to me once where I was battling that phenomenon and I finally had to install another transmission.
This particular tranny didn't even pop out of gear at every deceleration but maybe every 100 times or so and when it happened I couldn't keep the gear in even applying some pressure on the stick. It was like the third gear was forced out by something.
I drove the car around for hours trying to make it happen and when it did, it was really weird.
I tried with a harder spring and different balls in the shifter shaft detent but to no avail.
I took that transmission apart but didn't find anything wrong so I just used all the bits and pieces in other transmission when rebuilding them and never had the problem again.
Check first of all so that the ball and spring is installed for the shifter positions. It's hidden behind the oil level cover.
