Rust is the number one issue. It's difficult if not impossible to fix, and extremely expensive, especially in relationship to how much old Saabs are worth. If you're just looking to get it running on the cheap and use it as a driver it's one thing. If you want to turn it into a truly nice car, at the very least start with a rust free body. Even then you could spend many thousands getting there. The fact is that you can get a really nice classic 900 for $3000 to $4000 these days--you could spend a lot more than that just turning this car into a reliable driver.Old Saabs will last just about as long as you want them to. If you can do some of the work yourself, get parts from wrecking yards etc, they can serve as inexpensive transportation, especially when compared to making a car payment. But you have to start with a car that has some assets--if it needs everything it's a bad deal even if someone gives it to you for free.
