If the shifter has gone out of adjustment (sinking passenger side motor mount, maybe) or if the locator pin on the shifter is misadjusted, 5th can be a bit of a chore to find.
The locator pin, pulls up when you lift the collar on the shifter to go into reverse. When it's in the normal position, the pin should ride up against a ridge in the shifter assembly that guides it into 5th.
