I pulled the carpet back, removed the center conosle and then undid those annoying three-sided nuts that hold the shift console to to the floor of the car (a chisel and a hammer did the trick). At that point the whole shift console comes out (and apart) and you can extract what remains of the bushing. Then i stretched the new bushing (dealer part) over the large ring at the end of the selector shaft. Doesn't look like it should be possible but that little bushing has a lot of give. I warmed mine up a bit in front of a lamp and used a pair of screwdrivers to force it over. As a side note, the old torn bushing was approx. 50% larger than my new replacement part- the rubber had absorbed so much grease and oil down there over the years that it had actually swelled. I suspect the swelling had forced it out of its groove and contributed to its demise. I used rubber-safe grease on reassembly to avoid future problems.
End result was much improved shifting feel and perfect engagement of 5th.
