I had the head off to replace the headgasket. Before removing the head, I rotated the engine (by turning the flywheel) to TDC, when the 0 Degree mark aligned with the mark on the crankcase. This was with the clutch cover removed. At this point, the marks on the cam lobes were also aligned with the marks on the cam bearing caps. I removed the head, and Cyl #1 was all the way up, flush with the surface of the head. I put everything back the same way, without rotating the engine. When I installed the clutch cover, I noticed the mark on the cover (that I had previously used for ignition timing)was not in line with the TDC mark, and correspondingly not aligned with the line on the crankcase.
I'll quadruple check this sometime in the next few days, as i'm still on Saabatical (waiting for turbo rebalancing)
Thanks,
Jonathan
