Unbelievably stupid timing question

I'm embarassed and totally humbled! I have recently acquired a 93 900 Turbo and it seems to strain under hard acceleration... I've been paruzing the various threads in here and have done the following:

New distributer cap and rotor, plugs, fuel filter, went on a vacume hose replacing spree, new air filter, fuel injector cleaner etc...

I've been struggling with the whole issue of adjusting the timing because bently says vehicles with Hall Effect sensors don't have to have their timing altered (maybe I misread, not sure)...

Um, and here's the really embarassing part... I'm assuming that the little square orifice on the clutch cover is the "window" to the timing marks? If so are the marks on the wheel closest to the engine block? Also, there appears to be a small "scribe" mark along the border of that little square hole... Is that a reference mark that is used to zero in the timing?

Now, showing my general lack of more intermediate shade tree mechanic-ship, what the hell does btdc? I mean I think it means "B.... Top Dead Center" but I'm not sure...

Now that I've thoroughly humiliated myself, is the hall effect sensor a serious consideration? Or am I just chasing a ghost in the whole "timing" issue?

I apologize for such trivial questions, but I had nowhere else to ask...
