Wierd windshield leak

What could possibly cause water to appear along the windshield-to-rubber from the drivers corner about 6 inches to the VIN plate?
Immediately after buying my 88 SPG last autumn(185000 miles)I had the windshield replaced. A month later I was pulling out the interior to dry it out. May have been a problem before I got the car, as there was evidence of prior wet spots on the floor.
I found the water along the windshield rubber, and have been back to the shop 4 times. Each time they would reseal the area, and each time the leak would lessen. This last time they were so frustrated that they pulled the windshield out, cleaned and sanded, re-installed (with a new windshield), and sealed the living sh__ out of it. These guys have been great and are no strangers to Saabs.
This morning, after a night of rain here in upstate NY, there is the same leak in the same place. The guys at the shop originally noted some rust on the tab by the VIN plate but no rust through or other problems, so what else could it be?
