Swapping transmission internals Posted by Chadwick [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Hey everyone
My 87 900s LPT blew the third gear out of the 5 speed transmission thismorning. This car was an automatic, but was switched to 5 speed in november using a transmission out of an 88 SPG. It had been making a clack sound in third for about a month now, i assumed it had broken a tooth and knew this situation would be coming up.
when i made the shift from second to third thismorning everything seemed normal until i got off the clutch and heard a realy loud CLACK CLACK CLACK sound and the car started jerking. Every other gear works fine, but third is toast.
The replacement transmission i have lined up came from an engine that threw a piston into the top of the tranny case just slightly, making the case itself useless, but all the internals are in tact. I was just going to swap the third gear over into my transmission, my question is, how hard is this to do? is it even possible? What should i check out in my transmission case while i'm in there?
I plan on doing motor mounts while the engine is out, but what else should i do?
Thanks in advance,
Chadwick
