The rack in '89 had a massive leak through the input shaft seal. I put a bottle lf the Lucas stop leak in and it slowed the leak considerably for a while. Then, after a month of so, the leak was worse than before I used it. Not that it surprised me, but it was worth a try. So, I gave up and installed a rebuilt rack.
The big difference between our cars is that the rack in mine was really sloppy as far as the way the pinion enganged with the rack. I suspect that the input shaft moved a lot, so there was more opportunity for leakage past the seal.
I think that the Lucas stuff does 2 things
- it's way more viscous than power steering fluid so it has a harder time getting past the seal to dribble out on the ground.
- it has something that swells the seal (unfortunately, things that do that tend to soften the seals, too)
It's a crapshoot.
