Brushes are a consumable, a wear item, and are replaceable by themselves. They are most often the ONLY thing wrong with an alternator when it's not charging (if its grounding wire is intact).
They are lots cheaper than the regulator and brushes as a unit, but on the Bosch alternator on a Saab they aren't a totally easy job to replace. (On some other makes, i.e. Chrysler vehicles, NipponDenso at least on a Honda, and some others, the brushes are a cinch to replace.)
You need to pull the regulator first, then use a soldering iron to remove the existing brushes (the braided copper wire lead of each brush, where it solders to the regulator) and enough solder so the hole is clear for the new lead.
You don't want to use so much solder on the new ones that it wicks down the lead and turns it stiff. And you want to leave enough slack in the new leads that your new brushes have full extension.
