Well, the first one that comes to mind is the time I upgraded my older solid rotor front brakes to the 87 vented rotors. It's a process of removing the wheels, taking the brake pads out, disconnecting and plugging the fluid supply line, unbolting the calipers. So with the "new" 87 rotors in place, I was surprised to find that the 87 calipers didn't quite fit - the caliper body was rubbing against the rearmost part of the rotor. Not good. I eventually figured out that I had to upgrade the older steering knuckles as well. Unfortunately the 87 steering knuckles from which the 87 calipers came from were 25 miles away in a junk yard. So I had to reinstall the older brake calipers, reconnect the fluid line, bleed the air... Your basic half day job turned into two days. Then there's the time I almost cut my thumb and forefinger off with a hacksaw while customizing a heat shield for the distributor. On last year's 4th of July, no less! This year I'm staying away from hand tools on the 4th.
