Yes - it does matter. If you add a "connector" (if you can find one) the chain will be longer. Then, when you engage cruise control, it will take a long time (3-5 seconds longer than usual) for you to know/feel cruise control is engaged, because the system slowly takes up the slack in the chain and finally gets the chain "tight" before you feel the engagement. If you added a connector, then took the slack out of the chain, I think it should be fine and work nice again.
