The capability of the ECU to store and regurgitate error codes begins in '88 for 16-valve non-turbos and '89 for turbos.
timing marks are on the flywheel and are visible through a square gap in the clutch cover right in front of where the clutch cover meets the engine block. Yes ... it's under all of that plumbing. If you lean just right, you can get enough visibility to see the timing marks when the flywheel is clean and you have a white line marking the right timing mark.
Good chance that you have to clean the rust off of the flywheel where the timing marks are and put a white paint mark at 16 deg BTDC. Of course, it's easier to say that than it is to do it. Some guys have held a wire brush against the flywheel while the engine is idling to try to clean it off.
If money is an object, a Haynes manual works for around 75% of the tasks on a C900. Bentley adds good electrical diagrams and more detail to procedures.
