Dave New had something on his website about taking apart the speedometer of an '88. The '89 and later speedometers are a little harder to take apart and get to the odometer drive gear - you have to remove the needle and unscrew the speedometer from the face plate to get to it.
One fellow, whose name escapes me right now, said that he gently lifts the needle over the peg and marks its rest position on the gauge face in pencil. That leaves an index point for replacing the needle after reassembling the speedometer. Then he unscrews the face and can access the gears.
It's probably possible to drip superglue or red Loctite into the gear to stop it from spinning on the shaft.
http://www.fixyoursaab.com (formerly twinsaabs.com) has good info on taking the dash fascia apart.
