I need some help diagnosing a problem that has quickly made my '87 Saab Turbo five speed with 139K miles almost undriveable. My car now begins to lurch whenever I am starting from stop on an uphill grade or if I punch the gas pedal to accelerate quickly. It doesn't appear to matter what speed I am going. It gets progressively worse in rhtythmic fashion and I end up having to feather the gas and or clutch to keep the car from stalling and or shaking itself to pieces. It doesn't seem to matter if the engine is warm or not. At idle, the engine is now running rough and if I race the engine when I let off it misfires some and on occasion will stall. I also just noticed that some exhaust seems to be drifting out of the engine oil dipstick/intake shaft.
As additional background, I did replace my pre pump roughly 750 miles ago and my turbo roughly 1,000 miles ago. I did the repairs myself and seemingly was perfectly successful at doing so. When I do reflect back over the past couple months, I do recall a very minor amount of sporadic lurching that may have started about the time I put in the new prepump. It got significantly worse within the past couple days.
Right now the gas tank is 7/8 full. It does seem like some sort of fuel delivery or timing issue. Would you please give me your expert deductions as to what I should explore first?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Trevor

P.S. Would you believe all this is happenneing right after I picked up my car after a failed Virginia state inspection at a local Firestones? The inspector failed me in part because of torn windshield wipers and supposedly miss-aimed headlights? I checked the wiper blades before I turned it over to them because they have dinged me on this before. They were fine. The inspector tore them when he did his testing of pulling on them which he gladly demonstrated to me. These blades were the silicone lifetime variety and less than a year old. And I have never had anyone show any concern with the projection of my headlamps but their high caliber machine suggests otherwise to the tune of a $20 reaiming. So now I have 14 days to get re-tested for $1 otherwise it goes up to $15!
