Thanks for the advice. I appreciate the quick response here.
I didn't drive it only 100 feet, but maybe only a mile. I just went out to take a second look at it. The rear belt (closest to the firewall) is the one that broke. The other one (identical) which sets in front of it is still intact and seems to be in pretty good shape.
But when I was looking at it and checking the tension, it did seem a little loose. Then I noticed that the alternator mounting seemed to have a lot of play in it. I pulled the alternator gently toward the driver's side fender. When I did that, it sort of locked in place. It would still move a bit toward the fender, but not toward the engine block, where before it was moving either way with some bit of effort.
I should also mention that even though the coolant tank was bubbling over, the car wasn't overheating, not even close.
