How do I Adjust a Short Shifter?

The 5spd shifter on my recently purchased 900T convertible was acting squirrely (lever turned as I shifted, always hard to find 5th, sometimes hard to find others), so I took out the shifter, and found that the bracket holding it down had been replaced with sheet metal, and the plastic bushing in the upper ball joint had pretty much deteriorated.
Eventually, I figured out that the lever was also broken under the top ball, and the 5th gear lockout was the only thing holding the whole mess together. At this point, there is no going back to that shifter.
I decided to replace the whole shifter with the saabsavior short shift kit, since it looked like it was quite a bit better made than the stock one, and cheaper too.
So far, I have spent 4 evenings trying to get this thing adjusted, but am at my wits end. The best I have done is to get 1st-5th, but not reverse, or 3rd-5th with reverse.
Can anyone give me any pointers for adjusting this? Using the method described in the Bentley manual for the stock shifter doesn't seem to work.
My last attempt, I ended up shifting into 5th, loosening the linkage, then adjusting the lever to where I thought it should go, and tightening the linkage.
Does this seem normal? Should I try to find a position that gives me reverse, and perform the same procedure? Is there a trick I'm missing?
Since I just bought this car, I'd really rather drive it than work on it. Is my best bet to cut my losses and buy the Saab shifter?
Thanks,
John
