pull up the accordian spacer in front of the console and look at the gear rod.
As you move the shifter from side-to-side, like you're going from the 1-2 gate to the 5-R gate, the gear rod should have a pure twisting motion instead of moving from side-to-side. If it moves side-to-side, the rubber bushing that keeps it from doing that has deteriorated and you will want to change it.
Unfortunately, if that's the case, you'll need to remove the shifter assembly and take off the plastic lower gear shift housing and stretch the new rubber bushing over the big end of the gear rod to replace it.
