I did a head gasket on my '87T this spring and I had never done one before on a DOHC engine. It really was not all that difficult. I had the luxury of taking my time and working on it when I felt like it. IMHO, I'd replace the gasket and enjoy that car the way it is and not mess with the transmission. Use the notes from the Townsend site as a blue print on how to do the job...keep notes...mark wires. I have a feeling you'll say "gee that wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be".
I left the exhaust manifold on the head and disconnected it from the turbo unit (do you have a turbo?). I did remove the intake manifold however. I also didn't bother with the locating dowels....I tried at first, but it was a bigger pain than not using them.
