Deep Impact is on CBS tonight. Tea Leoni, the main character, drives a classic 900. I think what I find interesting about it is the fact that everything you see on the screen in a film is very thoroughly planned out-the clothes, where they live, even the silverware. I mean everything is deliberately choosen for a reason. So the question is why an old Saab? I mean if she drove a new Ford, they would call Ford, tell them what they want, and they would deliver it to them. Not only would it be free, they would probably pay for the product placement. I have to assume either the writer or director must have choosen an old Saab to make some kind of statement about the character. As one who drives a twelve year old Saab with very little thought over how it might impact my image, I suppose maybe I should consider it. I guess what I'm wondering is just what statement it makes, or what statement does a Hollywood film maker think it makes?
