Perhaps because in the scene you describe, she is driving back to her "roots" on Chesapeake Bay to be with Father. She has just given her seat in the helicopter up to a lady (co-worker) and daughter.
Perhaps in keeping with one of SAAB's selling points, "the state of indepdance", the writers chose a SAAB.
I've seen the movie several times and never before noticed the type of car(until now since I own a 900).
I also thought it ironic now one else thought to drive on the side of the road. Guess the other desparate soles didn't think of it.
Let's see, if it had been a Ford, (found or repair daily), would the scene have played out with her changing a tire. Chevrolet, (see the USA in a Chevrolet), perhaps driving off into the sunset. A Honda would have touted it's resale value, of course the world was coming to an end, so not much to be gained there. Had she preferred a BMW, she would never have gotten off the helicopter in the first place (unless the seating was coach).
Oh well, enough and no offense to those that may own one of these other vehicles.
