I spent a little time searching 3M websites and the closest tape I could find to make hood protective tape like Saab's original was their 8681HS (high shear) polyurethane protective tape, made in I think five matte shades of gray, all military color codes, for protecting the surfaces of aircraft. Plainly it's got the right stuff to conform, stick and stay stuck on the nose of a 900's hood.
The question is, how close does it come in color and look? It's not glossy, but it doesn't have the pebble texture that the original tape had. It's 14 mil, so is a pretty substantial product.
The 3M data sheet PDF only lists the military code numbers for the colors but it's possible one of the shades comes close to a charcoal gray, which is what I'd call the hood strip on my 89.
The minimum order is probably a case, 6 rolls, 36 yards each by whatever the minimum width is, probably 1 1/2 or 2 inches.
Then there's the problem of getting a pattern for the proper contour, maybe peeling an old one off carefully and laying it out on a long strip of some pattern material.
The thought also occurred, maybe there's a sign vinyl that is matte finish and outdoor rated that could be used. If so maybe someone could SCAN an old strip into their computer and make a computer file, PDF? maybe, that could be used by a signmaker to slit out the required pieces, mass production or repeatable orders as needed.
A little while back someone on here suggested 3M non-skid tape strips as a replacement. I just spotted a car someone had done this on in a junkyard, and the result was PATHETIC, not conforming at the corners, cracking and lifting, and only a crude approximation of original contour, besides way too thick and very prickly.
