Replace crankshaft hall sensor or live with it?

Our 140K '93 just died stone dead on a long trip. Hot hot day, fully loaded, driving fast. Tried all all the usual cures including letting it cool for a couple hours, but wouldn't restart.
Had it towed 200 miles to a reliable deale. Shop says it sounds like classic crankshaft sensor probalm, and will cost $600 to replace. However car when unloaded at dealer ran fine again, even after I left it idling for 40 minutes and did repeated restarts.
Anyhow, it runs so well now that I am wondering whether the failure was the first warning of a failing part, and I should replace it immediately, or just a glitch caused by extreme conditions/bad luck, and may not need replacement.
