Failed fuel gauge

Looks like I've got a bad fuel gauge sending unit on my 1990 C900T. Last weekend on a road trip, the fuel gauge was reading empty, and the low fuel light came on even though I knew I had fuel in the tank. The low fuel light flickered on and off a few times, and now the light isn't glowing at all.
I went into the trunk, armed with the Bentley manual and took some readings with my ohm-meter. According to the Bentley, the fuel sending unit is on the ground side of the gauge and warning light, and there's lines on the sender for the warning light, for the gauge, and the ground. I I first checked the ground, and I had 0.6 ohms to the body of the car...ground is good. I then checked the resistance from the common terminal, to the gauge terminal, and the warning light terminal. Both of these measurements were infinite. I imagine I am supposed to be getting some amount of resistance, that varies depending on how much fuel is in the tank. The Bentley though doesn't tell me how much resistance I should be seeing on a properly working sender, but infininite definitely doesn't look right! What am I supposed to be getting.
I wanted to take the sender out and inspect it, but I couldn't get the plastic collar ring to budge. How do you remove that thing?
