Makes my feet cold and wet just thinking about it.
If you have access to a digital camera, take lots of closeups of the ignition switch to get the wire orientation.
Those three-cornered nuts can be a bear to get off. I've used a few things to remove them - made a tool out of a cheap 11-mm socket, used a hammer and a screwdriver to knock them loose, and ruined a cheap pair of needle-nose pliers. They all work decently.
One thing that I found you'll want to do is to jack the car up, put it on stands and go underneath to loosen the pinch bolt on the shift coupler to allow the shift rod to rotate. I runied the shift coupler on my '88 900S by removing and twisting the shifter assembly too much when I was doing some work on it. You'll need to adjust the shifter after, but it's a small price to pay. It's also easier to work on with at least one front seat out. (Isn't it amazing how little things grow to tasks of monumental proportions? But you'll be able to get all of the coins that the previous owner dropped into the console 8-)
When you do that, you can just rotate the shifter assembly and access the torx screws that hold the plastic lower housing while the shifter is in the car.
Thinking about it, if you just work on it while it's in the car, you don't need to disconnect the wires from the ignition switch.
