Preventative replacement of '90-on fuel pump?

My dead '93 finally made it home after 3 tows and one ferry ride, and it turned out the problem was a fuel pump ( I guess presence of fuel/pressure in the rail doesn't mean as much as I thought!).

Anyhow the dealer wanted $700 to fix it, hence the third tow to get it home, where I replaced the Walbro pump insert and check valve for $80, and the car is fine.

Checking records on our '89, I notice i replace the fuel pump on it at about 150-200K too (in a supermarket parking lot some 25 miles from home, no AAA in those days).

This has me wondering if routine replacement of the pumps, on the cars where on can replace the Walbro insert rather than the whole pump especially (which seem to die sooner too) since this is one of those things that can stop you dead and leave you stranded far from home, and when it does happen, it will cost you an exhorbitant amount to get it fixed since the shop will almost certainly replace the whole assembly rather than just the bad pump.
