When you cleaned the connections at the battery, did you clean the outside of the clamps, or did you take the clamps off the battery posts, and clean the inside of the clamps and outside of the posts? You must do the mating surfaces - inside of the clamps and outside of the posts. While you're at it, peek inside the insulation where the battery cable wire comes out. If you see the wire strands covered in a greenish or whitish powder, there is corrosion in there, replace the cables.
This sounds a lot like a battery / cable connection problem. The fact that the radio needs the code points to the battery - the 'keep alive' voltage for the radio doesn't come through the ignition switch.
It may also be a bum battery. But I'd start with the cables.
