Our 97 900se turbo is an auto, and my 87 T16S is a manual. At speed, I'd say the two are about even, but the 'perception' is different, as earlier mentioned. But the big difference is the launch.
The auto turbo is painfully slow at launch, much slower than a non-turbo auto off the line. Now, from 1-2 or 2-3, it's true that its a seamless power transfer with no (or low) boost loss... but by that time the manual is way ahead. The turbo lag is just REALLY bad.
It also helps that my c900 trans is out of a non-turbo manual, which came with overdrive. That switch gave me a few MPH at the end of each gear, so first isn't so painfully short anymore. But even with a power braking launch, the auto just can't build up the boost like a stick at launch. Which leaves you either power braking at the line, or revving in N and shifting to D, with both options making it easy to destroy your box.
I should second what was said about the torque converter, our 97 has 185 hp, and a c900 with the redbox is rated at 185... but the redbox has 202 ft-lbs! And we all know how important torque is. So it'd say that the loss in torque counters any gain in holding the boost between shifts.
and that's irrelevant if you're bouncing off the rev limiter between shifts in the 5 speed... ;-)
