put the shifter in a neutral position then loosen the pinch bolt on the shift coupler and move the shifter from side-to-side once or twice. Since it's an '87 with internal centering it should go into the 3rd/4th shift gate without much persuasion.
Then follow the shifter adjustment procedure for 86.5 onwards 900s on the linked Townsend Imports page.
Instead of using the special locating tool that's shown in the 3rd picture down, I found that you can pull sharply back on the shift shaft stub coming out of the transmission to put it in 3rd gear. If the shift coupler pinch bolt is loose enough, you can move the shifter around without disturbing the position of the shift shaft stub. Position the shifter with an appropriate drill bit in the positioning hole, pull back again on the shift shaft stub just to be sure, tighten the pinch bolt, and you'll be ready to check the shifter to make sure that it goes in all gears.
