had a few similarities to yours, so I have a few suggestions that you might try. Clean up battery terminals, battery cables and cable mounting points on the starter and all ground points. This still did not do it for me, BUT when I cleaned and re-installed the short braided cable on the solenoid to the starter (13mm nut on the back of solenoid) it took care of my hesitant starting. NOTE: Do all of this with the negative cable off the battery, or you WILL get sparks. YET, your battery with the one dead cell you mentioned gives you about a 10-volt battery, so that would be my first item of business.
