You don't need to remove the tank unless it's leaking from a crack in the tank itself.
On your newer one, you have the canister pump. Both supply & return lines go directly into the top of the fuelpump 'basket'. With the cover off, you should try to see exactly where the leak is coming from.
One screw to remove a retaining bracket from over the top of the 2 hose elbows. Each hose elbow has an O-ring, pull straight up. Probably they're dried up & don't really slip easily out. Get new O-rings even if they didn't leak before. Don't yank hard, that plastic tubing is kinda brittle. Don't mix up which tube is which, either...
Then you unscrew the big ribbed ring around the outside. Hang onto the top of the pump basket so it doesn't turn. I found that steady pressure works a lot better than hammering. It'll start moving slowly.
When the ring is off, you push down on the center of the pump basket. It's spring-loaded. Grab the big rubber donut that's trapped between the basket & the tank-opening. Maybe you need a new rubber donut seal?
Now you can take the fuel pump out, just lift the basket out. Towards the bottom of the basket there's a tube looping out one side. Don't break that...
Let us know where it's actually leaking. You may not even have to go as far as removing the pump.
