I work on, rebuild, and modify classic 900 and ng900 cars.

I do all mechanical work and no body work (besides washing/waxing). So I look for
clean cars with good paint and good sheet metal underneath. In my view, engines &
transmissions & interiors & suspensions are easily swapped, rebuilt, or otherwise fixed.

I accept some defects in the car if the car has something special in it; either a special
model (SPG, commemorative edition, turbo convertible), has special parts, or has recently
had a lot of work done to it (this happens a lot) by the previous owner.

For instance, I have a 1988 c900T hatchback 5speed in my shop now that is missing reverse.
It only needs one stupid part (a new gear) to be a great daily driver for somebody, but as it
sits it has absolutely no resale value, so I’m not going to lift a finger to get it driving again.
What’s going against it? Bad paint, multiple dents, broken droopy headlights, aging cloth
interior, needs AC work and detailing. I’ll be parting it out and looking for the next one,
hopefully I’ll be able to recycle some of these parts into a worthy chassis.

My point is not to use my guidelines exactly but figure out what your guidelines are and
make an informed decision. But if your car is mechanically sound with pretty good
maintenance history & straight body, it seems like a good candidate for refinishing school.

One thing is for sure...there is no other car that you can buy that is anything like your
classic Saab 900, so don't think that you can just switch to a newer car (even a newer saab)
and keep all that great c900 vibe. You'll always miss the c900 for something.
