Leaking slave cylinder after pilot bearing replacement

Thanks to the assistance from members of the list, I was able to get the pilot and throwout bearings replaced on my 900 8 valve. I also replaced the O-rings in the slave cylinder and now, apparently, it is leaking. I found out the hard way--my wife took the newly repaired car, sat at a light with the clutch depressed, and when she tried to shift into gear, it wouldn't--because the clutch had meanwhile engaged even though the pedal was still on the floor. This did not go over well with my wife, stuck in the middle of a busy Northern Virginia road surrounded by impatient and unsympathic drivers!
Any ideas what I did? The slave cylinder is the new design with rubber bellows. Did I depress the clutch to far when removing the ring tool from the clutch? There is a warning about that in the manual.
I would really like to remove the slave cylinder this weekend without removing the clutch to fix this leak. I wasn't able to do this before--I could only get it out together with the clutch. Could someone give me more details on how this is done? Am I just not compressing the slave cylinder enough?
As a result, I haven't split and installed the plastic cover yet. I was going make a post about how that went.
I am most grateful....
Tom C
