There are a few things you'll want to check Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Problem with engine fumes/heat coming through vents, Rosie McCobb, Mon, 26 Sep 2005 12:12:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It sounds liek you have an opening through the firewall between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment. Not a good situation at all.
The first thing to check is the rubber seal piece around the universal joint assembly that goes through the firewall between the steering wheel and the steering rack. It may have come loose from the hole in the firewall. My bet is on this since you say it's coming in on the driver's side.
The second one is the rubber seal for the shifter rod (assuming that you have a 5-speed). You'll need to put the car up on jack stands and look at the place where the shift rod runs through the firewall.
The third place is the rubber seal for the speedometer cable. I've seen a couple that have opened up.
4th place is the rubber gasket around the place that the heater valve connectors go through the firewall.
Next - rust holes. Have to get underneath and look for them at the same time the shift rod seal is being looked at.
If it has had an alarm system installed, look for holes on the driver's side kickpanel under the carpet.
These will give you some places to start looking.
