Besides the other mentioned rubber seal locations, and even though you mentioned the flow coming from the driver's side - on the opposite side of the cabin, on the right side wall just behind and above the knee padding is a hole for a group of wires which runs from the cabin to the engine compartment. It's sealed with a rubber boot of one style or another. I've seen plenty of those boots ruptured, which is an easy route for heat and fumes from the exhaust side of the engine to make it's way into the car interior. Because that boot is located behind the dash and inside the sound absorbing padding, perhaps it's an easy route for those fumes to travel from the right side to an outlet near the driver. You can easily see the wires plus the rubber boot I'm talking about by looking near the plastic vacuum canister, which is beneath the power steering fluid reservoir.
