I struggled with the same thing when my 87 cvt was painted. I chose to go for it, and it looks so much better. It doesn't have that 'chunky' look, like added-on body panels often do. It makes the car look much newer, actually. Much smoother in my opinion, but it's your car, so you decide. I personally don't regret it a bit, and I've gotten several comments about my 87 looking more like a 97. The SPG panels really round out the look of the car, makes the lines of the car flow much better. Having them painted the same color only furthers this look, but that's just my .02.
Oh, and sure it's not original for your 86, but if I remember correctly, there were 85 SPG's that were matched black with black panels... and the original pearl white concept had painted panels... looked very slick. go ahead and look up some pics and decide. Let us know how it turns out!!
