First thought was that if the diff carrier bearing race looked to be in good shape, then that would indicate the bearing set itself is ok. If that bearing went south, you'd more than likely see evidence of it on the race surface with scoring, scratches, pitting, what to speak of some horrific sounds while that was happening. There's also the issue of inner driver bearing preload with a new set of bearings just on one side. The preload setting is based on both bearing sets upon manufacturing. The original set will invariably wear, but evenly on both sides. A new set on one side throws that preload off, which might cause even stranger sounds coming from your differential gear. Getting another set for the other side isn't the answer either since the preload would have to be adjusted for that new pair. What was bad about the bearing set inside the inner driver?
