if you hear air out the tail pipe you either have a burnt exhaust valve or stuck open exhaust valve.
If you hear air out the throttle body (you have to remove the induction tube to the TB) you bad intake valve sealing.
Depending on what you want to do with it, you can then pull the cover and see what's moving or not.
to belabor the obvious, if you're going to have the head redone professionally, you can still drive the car to the shop without having to have it flatbedded or pay for (and do) a useless cover seal.
OTOH, if you're pulling the head yourself, go ahead and remove the cover.
If this is an SPG, I'd probably look for a ported head and use yours as a core. 115K is nowhere near problems with valve springs but I guess a lifter could stick/badly! 115K is also unusual for a burnt exhaust valve. I've never had one in over 200K on a couple of Saabs but I've heard of them...in fact, I think during the first high speed tests at Talladega with the 9K Saab burnt a couple exhaust valves. In street use, much less likely. Modified cars, all bets are off!
